School-University Partnership Initiative (SUPI)

RCUK School-University Partnership Initiative (SUPI)

The Research Councils UK (RCUK) funded School-University Partnership Initiative (SUPI) is a four-year catalyst scheme providing opportunities for schools and universities to bring contemporary research to life for young people.

Working with schools within Greater Manchester, we seek to inspire the next generation of researchers by bringing secondary and sixth-form students, research staff, and teachers together.

The Manchester Research Gateway

Currently in its fourth year of funding, our SUPI has already achieved a great deal. The implementation of six flagship projects have helped to create solid links between researchers at The University of Manchester and schoolteachers within local schools and colleges.

Our key aim has been to communicate to secondary school students what research means across a variety of academic disciplines. Researcher-led projects have, and continue to bring pupils into contact with the processes and skills involved not only in gathering knowledge, but also in creating new knowledge. Our belief that research has social and cultural, as well as economic, value underpins the initiative.

We seek to do this through a process of:

  • Training and development for both University researchers and schoolteachers, including a system of reward and recognition;
  • Implementing and delivering research-based activities for young learners and teachers that allow them to engage in research processes, while finding out about research being undertaken at the University;
  • Involving teachers and students in the planning of research-based engagement activities.

Projects within the initiative

Over the past three years, researchers have been in the process of developing school-university collaborations relating to their specialisms.

All these activities are listed in the 'Flagship Projects' and 'Project Listing Portal' tabs, so that teachers can identify collaboration opportunities that best suit their schools.
